CBSE Class 9 Maths and Science 2026-27 — Everything That Changed
What changed at a glance
Class 9 in the 2026-27 session is the first batch to study under a fully rewritten curriculum. This is not a small edit. Both Mathematics and Science have new course structures, new textbooks and a new two-level examination plan.
If you are in Class 9 this year, or you are a parent or teacher guiding one, this page gives you the official position in one place.
| Aspect | Earlier sessions | From 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|
| Curriculum framework | Chapter-based, split into Physics, Chemistry and Biology | Aligned to NCF-SE 2023 and NEP 2020, built around themes and competencies |
| Science structure | Three separate disciplines | One integrated subject — Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science |
| Earth Science | Not a separate component at this stage | Introduced for the first time as “Earth as a System: Energy, Matter and Life” |
| Levels of study | Mathematics offered as Basic and Standard | Mathematics and Science offered as Standard and Advanced |
| Mathematics textbook | Mathematics — Textbook for Class IX | Ganita Manjari, Textbook of Mathematics for Grade 9, Part I |
| Science textbook | Science — Textbook for Class IX | Exploration — Textbook of Science for Grade 9, a new 13-chapter volume |
| Third language | Not compulsory in the same way | R3 third language is compulsory in Classes VI and IX, with school-based assessment |
| Mathematics chapter list | Number Systems, Polynomials, Coordinate Geometry and so on | New chapters added, including Sequences and Progressions and Introduction to Probability |
The new Class 9 Mathematics book covers ideas that used to be taught in Class 10 and later — arithmetic progressions, geometric progressions and a pair of linear equations in two variables are now in Class 9. Old Class 9 material that assumes the previous chapter order will confuse you.
The new Class 9 content feeds directly into the redesigned Class 10, which reaches the board examination in 2028. Getting the Class 9 foundation right now is the cheapest way to protect your Class 10 marks.
The two-level plan — Standard and Advanced
From 2026-27, Mathematics and Science are offered at two levels. Every student studies the same Standard course. The Advanced level is an extra, optional paper for students who want to go deeper.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who takes the Standard course? | Every student. There is no option to skip it. |
| Who can take the Advanced exam? | Any student who chooses to opt for it. It carries no extra aggregate marks, so it is taken only for the challenge. Ask your school for the last date to exercise the option. |
| What is in the Advanced paper? | Additional content beyond the Standard course. Every question is a higher-order thinking question. |
| How long is it, and for how many marks? | One hour, 25 marks. |
| Do those 25 marks go into my total? | No. They are not added to your aggregate. |
| So what do I get from it? | If you score 50% or above, your marksheet records that the Advanced level has been successfully cleared. |
| Does it apply from this year? | Yes, in Class IX from 2026-27. In Class X, Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced begin in 2027-28. |
| What happened to Basic and Standard Mathematics? | The old two-level scheme of Mathematics Basic and Mathematics Standard is discontinued from 2026-27. Class X students in 2026-27 continue under the existing scheme. |
Opt for it if you enjoy the subject and you are already finishing your practice work comfortably. It is a signal of depth for later years, but it carries no extra aggregate marks. Choosing it only because others are choosing it is a bad reason.
Class 9 Mathematics — official course structure
The annual examination is for 80 marks and lasts 3 hours. Internal assessment adds 20 marks, giving 100.
| Unit | Unit name | Chapters in the syllabus | Periods | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | Number System | Number System | 12 | 07 |
| II | Algebra | Introduction to Polynomials; Sequences and Progressions; Exploring Algebraic Identities; Linear Equations in Two Variables | 66 | 20 |
| III | Coordinate Geometry | Coordinate Geometry | 06 | 04 |
| IV | Geometry | Introduction to Euclid’s Geometry: Axioms and Postulates; Lines and Angles; Triangles — Congruence Theorems; 4-gons (Quadrilaterals); Circles | 69 | 25 |
| V | Mensuration | Area and Perimeter; Surface Area and Volume | 27 | 14 |
| VI | Statistics and Probability | Statistics; Introduction to Probability | 24 | 10 |
| Theory total | 204 | 80 | ||
| Internal assessment | 20 | |||
| Grand total | 100 | |||
Geometry alone carries 25 marks — nearly a third of the paper. Algebra carries 20. Together they are 45 of the 80 theory marks. Coordinate Geometry carries only 4, so it should take about four days of work, not four weeks.
In the previous structure, Number Systems carried 10 marks and Geometry carried 27. Now Number System is down to 7 and Geometry to 25, Mensuration has risen to 14, and Statistics and Probability are clubbed together at 10. Do not plan your time using an old weightage table.
The new Mathematics textbook — Ganita Manjari
NCERT has replaced the old Class 9 Mathematics book with a redesigned one. Its first edition is dated April 2026. The title is Ganita Manjari — Textbook of Mathematics for Grade 9, Part I. It has eight chapters.

Ganita is an old Indian word for mathematics. Manjari means a bouquet of flowers. The book presents mathematics as a collection of ideas, like flowers gathered together — each with its own colour and shape.
The book brings in Baudhayana’s Sulbasutras for constructing a square and for the squaring of a rectangle, Brahmagupta’s formula for the area of a cyclic quadrilateral, Aryabhata’s treatment of π, and Madhava’s infinite series. These are part of the chapter narrative, not separate chapters.
In Ganita Manjari, questions and sections marked with an asterisk are enrichment material. The book states that they are not to be assessed or included in examinations. You can read them for interest without worrying about marks.
The official syllabus lists 15 topics, but Part I covers only eight of them. Topics such as Linear Equations in Two Variables, Euclid’s Geometry, Lines and Angles, Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Surface Area and Volume and Statistics belong in the Part II volume. At the time of writing, only Part I had been published, so confirm the current position on ncert.nic.in before buying.
Class 9 Science — official course structure
Science is now one integrated subject. The chapter numbers below are the official numbers used in the curriculum document.
| Unit | Unit name | Chapters in the syllabus | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | World of Living | 2 Cell; 3 Tissues; 11 Reproduction; 12 Diversity | 27 |
| II | Matter — Its Nature and Behaviour | 5 Exploring Mixtures and their Separation; 8 Structure of an Atom; 9 Atoms and Molecules | 25 |
| III | Motion, Force, Work and Sound | 4 Motion; 6 Force and Laws of Motion; 7 Work, Energy and Simple Machines; 10 Sound | 23 |
| IV | Earth as a System | 13 Earth as a System: Energy, Matter and Life | 05 |
| Theory total | 80 | ||
| Internal assessment | 20 | ||
| Grand total | 100 | ||
Biology carries the highest weightage at 27 marks, followed by Chemistry at 25. Physics carries 23 and Earth Science 5.
All thirteen chapters, in order
What is genuinely new in Science
| Change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| An introductory chapter on how science works | Models, predictions, scientific reasoning and the link between science, mathematics and society. Read it — it sets the tone for the whole year. |
| Earth Science added for the first time | “Earth as a System: Energy, Matter and Life” — the spheres of the Earth, solar energy, differential heating, winds, the water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycles, and human impact. It carries 5 marks and is easy to score in. |
| Chapters are integrated, not discipline-wise | A single textbook moves between biology, chemistry, physics and earth science. Do not expect a “physics section” and a “chemistry section”. |
| Work and Energy has grown | It is now “Work, Energy and Simple Machines” and includes levers, pulleys and inclined planes. |
| No separate Gravitation chapter and no separate Electricity chapter | The official course structure for 2026-27 has no chapter by either name at this level. Do not spend time on old Class 9 chapters that are not in the list. |
| More weight on experiments and application | Thirteen practicals are prescribed, and the question paper tests application and higher-order thinking, not recall alone. |
The Class 9 Science book is a new 13-chapter volume called Exploration — Textbook of Science for Grade 9, first published in April 2026. It replaces the older discipline-wise Class 9 Science book.
Other changes you should know about
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Third language, called R3 | From 2026-27, the R3 third language is compulsory in Classes VI and IX, following NCF-SE 2023. Its assessment is school-based and internal. There is no separate board examination in R3 at Class X, but passing R3 is mandatory for certification. |
| CT and AI | Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence is introduced in Classes III to VIII from 2026-27, with modules planned for Classes IX to XII in the following session. |
| New textbooks | NCERT has released the new Grade 9 books and has published an advisory on the introduction of the new textbooks and syllabi. Always check ncert.nic.in for the current edition before buying. |
| What did not change in Class 10 this year | Class 10 in 2026-27 continues under the existing scheme, including the option of Mathematics Basic. The two-level Standard and Advanced plan reaches Class 10 in 2027-28. |
How you will be assessed
Both Mathematics and Science follow the same overall shape: an 80-mark annual examination of 3 hours, plus 20 marks of internal assessment.
The kind of thinking the paper tests
There is an internal choice of roughly one-third in the question paper, and the question types include objective, assertion-reason, short answer, long answer and case or passage based questions.
Internal assessment — 20 marks
| Component | Marks | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic Assessment | 05 | School tests across the year |
| Multiple Assessment | 05 | Quizzes, oral work, assignments and similar tasks |
| Portfolio | 05 | Classwork, neatness and written submissions |
| Subject Enrichment — practical work for Science, lab practical for Mathematics | 05 | Science has 13 prescribed practicals to be conducted alongside theory |
| Total | 20 |
Five marks in each subject come from practical work. That is ten marks across the two subjects, decided before any annual examination. Keeping a complete, neat record file is the easiest five marks you will ever earn.
What a Class 9 student should do now
- 1. Get the correct books. Ganita Manjari Part I for Mathematics and the new Exploration volume for Science. Do not study from an older Class 9 book for the new chapters.
- 2. Write down the marks weightage at the front of each notebook — Geometry 25, Algebra 20, Mensuration 14, Statistics and Probability 10, Number System 7, Coordinate Geometry 4.
- 3. For Science, plan in the order 27, 25, 23, 5 — Biology first, then Chemistry, then Physics, and Earth Science alongside.
- 4. Decide about the Advanced level only after your first two monthly tests. Look at how comfortably you finish your practice work, not at what your friends are choosing.
- 5. Start the practical record file in the first month. Fill it as each practical is done, never in a rush before the submission date.
- 6. Give the integrated Science textbook an honest reading. Students who skip the introductory chapter and the Earth Science chapter lose easy marks in the case-based questions.
- 7. Check the NCERT website once a term. New editions and the remaining parts of the Mathematics book are released in stages.
The unit marks, chapter lists, period allocations and internal assessment components come from the CBSE curriculum documents for Secondary Part-1, 2026-27 — Mathematics, Class IX, and Science, Code 086, Class IX — released under CBSE Circular No. Acad-14/2026 dated 1 April 2026. The two-level Standard and Advanced plan, the discontinuation of the Mathematics Basic and Standard scheme, and the third language rule are taken from the same curriculum document. The textbook titles, chapter names and the asterisk rule are taken from the NCERT Class 9 textbooks first published in April 2026 and from NCERT’s advisory on the introduction of new textbooks and syllabi. Where a figure could not be confirmed directly from an official source, it is marked on the page.
