PERIODIC TEST — Quadratic Equations (2026-27) | CLASS 10 | MATHEMATICS
Max Marks: 40 · Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (Time left: 90:00)
| Section | Marks | Questions | Time | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 12 | 12 MCQ | 15 min | Discriminant and root facts must be instant |
| B | 8 | 4 Short | 20 min | Factorise first; use the formula only if it will not factorise |

| D | 8 | 2 Case | 20 min | Turn the words into an equation before solving |
| Review | — | — | 5 min | Reject roots that do not fit the situation |
General Instructions: All questions are compulsory. Section A has 12 MCQs of 1 mark each. Internal choice is given in Sections B, C and D — attempt any ONE option. Where a word problem gives a physical quantity, reject the root that is not possible.
Section A — Multiple Choice (12 × 1 = 12 marks)
Choose the single best option.

= x(x − 2) − 3(x − 2)
= (x − 2)(x − 3)
So x = 2 or x = 3
Total: 1 Mark
D = (−4)2 − 4 × 2 × 3

(b) D = 16 − 20 = −4 → no real roots
(c) D = 25 − 24 = 1
(d) D = 9 − 8 = 1

Product = 3 × (−2) = −6
x2 − (sum)x + product = 0
x2 − 1x − 6 = 0
Section B — Short Answer (4 × 2 = 8 marks)

−7x = −3x − 4x and (−3)(−4) = 12
= x2 − 3x − 4x + 12
= x(x − 3) − 4(x − 3)
= (x − 3)(x − 4)
x = 3 or x = 4
Total: 2 Marks
D = b2 − 4ac
= 4 − 4 × 3 × 1/3
= 4 − 4
= 0
x = −b2a = 26 = 13
Total: 2 Marks
k2 − 4 × 1 × 4 = 0
k2 − 16 = 0
k = 4 or k = −4
Total: 2 Marks
= 2x2 + 4x − 3x − 6
= 2x(x + 2) − 3(x + 2)
= (x + 2)(2x − 3)
2x − 3 = 0 → x = 3/2
Total: 2 Marks
αβ = ca = 3kk = 3
−2 = 3k
k = −23

Section C — Long Answer (4 × 3 = 12 marks)
Total: 3 Marks
x = −b ± √(b2 − 4ac)2a
= 25 − 24
= 1
x = 5 + 16 = 1 or x = 5 − 16 = 23
Total: 3 Marks
x2 + x − 156 = 0
√625 = 25
x = −1 ± 252
x = 12 or x = −13
x = 12, so the integers are 12 and 13.
Check: 12 × 13 = 156 ✓

Add (4/2)2 = 4 to both sides:
x2 + 4x + 4 = 5 + 4
(x + 2)2 = 9
x = −2 + 3 = 1 or x = −2 − 3 = −5
Total: 3 Marks
x(x + 4) = 96
x2 + 4x − 96 = 0
x = −4 + 202 = 8 (the negative root is rejected as a length)
Length = 8 + 4 = 12
[Attempt any ONE of the two options of Q19]
Total: 3 Marks
k2 − 4 × 2 × 8 = 0
k2 − 64 = 0
k = 8 or k = −8

Section D — Case Study (2 × 4 = 8 marks)
Total: 4 Marks
Time at x = 360x hours
Time at (x + 5) = 360x + 5 hours
360x − 360x + 5 = 1
1800 = x2 + 5x
x2 + 5x − 1800 = 0
x = −5 + 852 = 40 (the negative root is rejected as a speed)
Total: 4 Marks
Length = (2b + 1) m
b(2b + 1) = 528
2b2 + b − 528 = 0
b = −1 + 654 = 16 (negative root rejected)
Length = 2(16) + 1 = 33
Total: 4 Marks
Upstream speed = (18 − x), downstream = (18 + x)
2418 − x − 2418 + x = 1
48x = 324 − x2
x2 + 48x − 324 = 0
x = −48 + 602 = 6
(x must be less than 18, and 6 < 18 ✓)
